Leadership in Complex Environments
“You can’t lead what you can’t perceive.” I help senior leaders, boards, and organizations see and navigate the social, political, organizational, technological, and human forces increasingly shaping their operating environment. I am the author of The Quantum Lens: Leading in an Era of Social, Political, and Organizational Entanglement and founder of Quantum Lens Advisory. Right now, one of the clearest tests of that capability is the 2026 election cycle.

The work today
Reading the Field around leadership.
Quantum Lens Advisory grew from a question Mark has carried across decades of work: what are leaders missing when a decision that looks sound inside an institution lands very differently with the people around it? He helps senior leaders and boards examine the emotional atmosphere, competing worldviews, institutional pressures and shifting stakeholder expectations surrounding a choice.
The Field is the full setting in which a decision will be interpreted. A political event can alter employee trust; a technological decision can change how communities understand opportunity and security; a public narrative can turn an internal policy into a test of legitimacy. Mark works across communications, public affairs, legal, HR, operations, brand and strategy so leaders can see those connections before they harden into a crisis.
His advisory work is nonpartisan and confidential. It brings people responsible for different parts of an organization into a shared reading of the situation, then helps them make clearer, more coherent decisions.
Selected experience
Work inside consequential institutions.
Mark’s career connects organizational strategy, human behavior and the pressures institutions face from the wider world. The range matters because these forces do not stay within one department or sector.
Marriott International
For nearly ten years, Mark served as a worldwide diversity consultant to the Marriott family of companies. He worked with its CEO and operating company presidents to shape strategy and education, including a multimedia program adapted for classroom, satellite and video delivery to a global workforce.
Federal leadership
At the CIA, he worked with senior appointed leaders as the intelligence community adapted to the political and social shifts of the post-Cold War era. He earlier served for two years as an Expert Consultant to the U.S. Department of Education and was on the design and facilitation team for two Congressional bipartisan retreats in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Enterprise learning
As founder of MarkusWorks, Mark developed learning platforms and interactive tools that helped people understand identity, worldview, diversity and inclusion in everyday organizational life. His programs reached individuals, teams and senior leaders across corporations, government, associations and education systems.
Organizations served
Across business, government and society.
Mark has provided consultation, education, keynote presentations and workshops for a wide range of organizations. His experience includes work with:
Other educational frameworks reached organizations including Avon, Office Depot, Freddie Mac and the Social Security Administration. These engagements span executive leadership, organizational learning, stakeholder relationships and the ways people interpret institutional decisions.
Research and writing
Making worldviews visible.
Mark is the author of five books, including The 10 Lenses: Your Guide to Living and Working in a Multicultural World. That work offered leaders a practical way to understand how identity and worldview shape experience. Research on identity and diversity included collaboration with Gallup, Zogby, Harris and SurveyUSA. The framework was used in corporations, government, higher education and communities.
The Quantum Lens extends that inquiry into a period when social, political, technological and organizational forces intersect more quickly and visibly. Its focus is perceptual intelligence: reading signals, emotional fuel and relationships among actors before the larger consequences of a decision become obvious.
Mark holds a master’s degree in Organizational and Social Psychology from American University. He has also spent more than twenty years designing distance learning and multimedia curricula, connecting research to education people can actually use.
Beyond advisory
Shared meaning is part of the work.
Mark composed One Song, Many Voices, the official theme song for the United Nations International Day of Tolerance. Performed by Vanessa Williams, the song was released in multiple languages by Warner Music and distributed globally. Mark received the Friends of the United Nations Global Tolerance Award for the composition.
The same concern runs through his writing and advisory work: how people with different histories and worldviews can recognize one another, understand the forces shaping a shared situation and find a way to act together.
